Origen , also known as Adamantios , was born in Alexandria. He was educated in the Christian faith and had , according to tradition , after his father was 202 killed during a persecution of Christians , are retained so as not to suffer the martyrdom itself . The church history standard works, according to which he was a pupil of Clement of Alexandria. Origen taught about 28 years in Alexandria and instructed Christians and pagans. According to Eusebius of Caesarea his asceticism and piety were so strong that he even castrated himself to avoid temptation. In Alexandria, he wrote his most important doctrinal treatises and started writing down a number of critical works .On a trip to Palestine 216 Origen, who was actually a layman , was invited by
the Bishop of Jerusalem and the Bishop of Caesarea, to keep in the church lectures on the Scriptures . To 230 Origen was ordained by the same bishops to presbyters , without the consent of his own bishop , Demetrius of Alexandria catch up . After Demetrius opposed this action , two synods were convened in Alexandria . On the first a teaching ban against Origen was adopted and on the second it its priesthood was denied .Thereupon Origen settled in Caesarea and founded a school for literature, philosophy and theology. During the persecution of Christians he was captured 250 under Emperor Decius and tortured. 251 he was released , but died about 254 , probably in Tyre , a result of his injuries.Origen's works include letters, treatises on the doctrine dogmas and practical theology , apologetic writings , interpretations of the Bible and critical writings . Contra Celsum ( Against Celsus ) is a comprehensive written defense , in which he defended Christianity against the attacks of the philosopher Celsus . The latter was an influential Alexandrian Platonists of the second Century and perhaps the first serious critics of Christianity.Origen is also considered the founder of the allegorical method of interpretation of Scripture. He introduced the doctrine of the threefold sense of Scripture , which corresponds to the spread at the time of conception of the tripartite division of man into body ( soma ) , soul ( psyche ) and spirit ( pneuma) . Accordingly, there is a literal ( somatic ) , moral ( psychological ) and mystical and allegorical sense of Scripture. Origen was a Platonist and tried to combine Greek philosophy with the Christian religion . He also developed the theory of Christ as the Logos , or the Word made flesh that exists in eternity with the Father. At the same time he also taught that the Son was inferior to the Father in power and rank. This latter doctrine , as well as some others, such as those of the pre-existence of the soul, were sharply criticized by many of his contemporaries and subsequent writers. Some of the theories have been derived from his teachings during the Middle Ages to the starting point for theological controversy.

The doctrine of Origen

God
God, whom we call our Father, is the origin of all things ( Princ. I, 1.6 ) . Everything has become of him . He is all spirit, but as such person nevertheless , it has a shape. God is the only existing since Urewigkeit beings uncreated . Our concept of time is not applicable to him ' God is visible only for a pure spirit and can only be perceived from such ( Cels. VI 17; Cels VI 69) . .Origen states in this : " Indeed, if we can make any idea and a concept of God to us , so we must assume necessary that God far superior in many ways, than our imagination . It is [ comparatively ] as if we were dealing with a man who is barely able to look at a spark of light or the light from the smallest lantern , and it can not hold more light with the small sharp his eyes as we said , wanted to teach them about the brightness and glare of the sun . Should not we tell him : The brightness of the sun is unspeakably and immeasurably greater and more sublime than the light that you see? So it is with our reason , when trapped in the dungeon of flesh and blood and has become according to their participation in the substance, dull and sluggish : She may compared to the rest of the flesh - physical nature earn by far the priority , and if they but up to the spiritual aims and strives to look at it , then she has hardly the strength of a spark or a lantern. But what is under all intellectual - that is not in the flesh - physical - things so exalted above all so unspeakably and immeasurably superior as God ? To look its nature, the sharpness of a human reason is not enough , it may even be as pure and clear. "( Princ. I, 1.5 . )To perform these facts more clearly and vividly before our eyes , Origen adds: " Our eyes can initially the nature of light itself - that is, the substance of the sun - not shown , and we can consider its luster or jets but that may be due window or any small light openings occur , and conclude how large the glowing mass was which emanates from the physical light. So the works of Divine Providence and the artful construction of this universe as it were rays of God's nature in comparison to its substance and nature itself Our reason are so familiar , as they are not , as it really is God in itself , may be considered , from the magnificence of his works and the beauty of its creatures the father of the universe . "( Princ. I, 1.6 . )God's knowledge and power suffer from God's essence out certain restrictions. For the following four reasons, the power of God is limited by Origen, and one must not under the guise of reverent awe take her these restrictions ( Princ. II 9.1 ) :First, it is limited by the nature of God : God can do what he wants . Second, by the logic : The power of God can not bring forth things that are contradictory. In other words :God can do nothing against his nature to cause Directional . All miracles are in the higher sense , of course , because they expire after Divine laws. Third, God's power is limited by the inability to include unlimited and direct to ( Princ. II 9.1 ) . It follows that everything created its circumferencemust be limited by . Fourth, is limited in that it is impossible to have a pure purpose and without interference to realize God's power .Accordingly, according to Origen, God's knowledge has a certain barrier. It follows in particular from the freedom of the mind that God has given them . Well God has the ability of foreknowledge , but he knows the actions of his creatures before because they happen - they happen not because he knows them .In God, goodness and justice, are not two as opposed to one another standing properties that might exist in it side by side or would have , but rather they are the same to him as virtues :God rewards and punishes with justice in goodness. Erginge it all being well , no matter how they behave , it would be no kindness towards them ; piety is when God punishes to reform to discourage and prevent . In God are neither passions , anger and the like , no multiplicity of virtues , but as the perfect is God all goodness.
 The doctrine of Origen

 Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit or Spirit of truth, is - according to Origen - not just a (single ) person, but this term describes all those spirit beings (angels) , the Christ , subservient ' are , so act in his spirit and work , so with him are one in spirit and in truth. These holy people , if they are not mentioned by name , or if their name is therefore not included because they want to go up in their service function , or because they are anxious to prevent misuse of its name by false prophets in Scripture simply as God's Spirit ' or as' spirit of Truth ' , yes even variously referred to only as' the spirit ' .Such holy minds have expressed the Old and the New Covenant in Christ's behalf . Christ himself spoke through people but only in the Old Testament , namely, by the prophets sent by him ( cf. Matt 24.5 ; Mark 13.6 ; . Luk 21.8 . ) . So the Apostle says ( . 1 Cor 2, 10) : " We liked it God revealed through his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God" And the Lord said to his disciples (John 16 , 12 f . . ; 14:26; 15:26) : " I have yet many things to say , but ye can not bear them now . But when the Comforter comes , a holy spirit , he will teach you everything and remind you of everything I have said to you , for he speaks of not of himself, but what he hears [ from me ] , he will speak "( . see princ . 1 3.4 . ) From the nature of the Holy Spirit but can only have a clue who is familiar with the law and the prophets ( cf. princ . 3 I , 1).

The doctrine of Origen

creation
The creation is by Origen from an unimaginably large indeed, but not infinite number of beings. As the core of their being they harbor one particles of divine light - a divine spark of light. This is despite the distance the people of God a them undiminished remaining heir of God and guarantees their spiritual immortality. '

The earthly nature, sun, moon and stars are mere representations of the intellectual creation. So there is on earth "nothing new under the sun" (Princ. II 9.1; III 5.3).

The doctrine of Origen
free will
All creatures have free will , by which they can make their life path. From this, the colorful diversity of the worlds with all its contradictions and Entwicklungsstufen.18 created The creatures are not just driven by a circuit that returns to the same train to more or less long periods of time , to do this or that or to desire , but rather depend them to run their actions to where they put it into their personal free decision ( Princ. II 3.4 ) .The ability to correct decision Origen saw the face of the influences of the "hostile powers" on our own decisions as follows :There are sins that we commit without any interference by the enemy forces , but there are also misdemeanors , the increase on their instigation go to immense and measureless . The "thoughts " which " come from our hearts " (cf. Matt 15, 19 , . Mark 7:21) - be it that we any events remind us , it is that we look at any of things and their relationships is - , go as we remember myself , sometimes out of ourselves , sometimes they are excited by the hostile powers , but sometimes they are given to us by God or of his holy angels. This breakdown could - Origen - appear as arbitrary invention , it was not confirmed by the testimony of Scripture itself : that a thought of us can develop themselves, David testified in the Psalms ( Ps. 76.11 ) with the words : . "Because the thought of man shall praise thee , and that which is left by the thought of celebrating yourself," but that he often comes from hostile powers , Solomon testified as follows ( Eccl. 10:4) : "If a spirit [ of the multitudes . ] which , the ruler [ of this world ] is come upon you, so do not leave your post , for serenity making great sins betting "The fact that a thought but can also come from God , in turn, testified David in the Psalms as follows : ' Blessed the man whose understanding of thee, O Lord ; stages of ascension are in his heart " (cf. Ps 84.6 . ) but also says the apostle ( Paul cf. 2 Cor 8:16 ). " . God has placed to Titus in the heart. "( Princ. III 234 )One must assume , however , it continues Origen, that all the good and evil that is whispered to our hearts , means nothing more than an incentive that will cause us for good or evil. However, it is possible for us , when the evil force begins to irritate us for worse, these evil whisperings to point us to withstand the vicious influences and to commit nothing culpable . Of course , conversely, come to the point that, if the divine power we can be an impetus for the better bestowed , afford no follow this impulse , because in both cases the capacity for free choice remains preserved us . ( Princ. III 234 )

fall of man
Freedom of choice was supported by a vast number of beings for us unimaginable long time ago being misused to turn away from Christ, you had vowed obedience to God. They recognized Christ's highest position for God no more and wanted a new order of dignities and glories under Lucifer's leadership. Inertia , weariness with the effort to preserve the good, and negligence against the Mend provided the impetus for the removal of the good . However, from a good vent means nothing more than to come to a bad ( Princ. II 9.2 ) , in the opposite power of good ( cf. princ . 1 5.4 ) . First and leaders of this counter-power was the one who was once the " bright morning star " ( Is. 14.12-22 ) was , and then , by turning away from good, for Satan was ( 1 Princ. 5.5 ) , the adversary of Christ .This first fall was the fall of the angels to the sequence ( cf. Ezek 28 , 11-19 , . Luk 10, 18 , . 0ff 12 , 7f . ) . The level of debt in this first fall decided - as Origen - at every single creature on his further fate . In its original beauty , the creatures had been fulfilled in nature to a divine reason. As a result of the waste they cooled ( in their minds ) and received by spiritual body of denser ( Ghost ) matter : they were too ethereal creatures of the underworld . The more the individual creature had rebelled against Christ , the closer was now his ( spiritual ) matter and the more repulsive and disgusting the form of his spiritual body .When you first fall but there were not only loyal and rebellious beings, but also a third group : the undecided these neither had remained faithful even unfaithful beings cooled ' off. They persist after Origen in an intermediate realm. It is not under the rule of the leader of the infidels , so Lucifer who was once light ( 1 Princ. 5.5 ) . The beings in this intermediate realm need for improvement not to take on human body. The faithless , however, pass through charitable influences ( the heavenly world ) and by their desire to change their condition sooner or later the stage of being human ( I Princ. 6.3 ) . You both in the visible and temporal ' worlds as in the invisible and eternal ' classified and treated according to their spiritual rank, according to their relationship to God , according to their nature and according to their merits.
ANGELS
Before the first fall all angels spirits had been. After that, the faithless were to evil spirits and unclean demons ( 1 Princ. 5.2 ) . In Scripture, they are also called angels of the devil ( 1 Princ. 6; Matt. 25:41) . The litter left behind were henceforth referred to as the holy angels and the angels of God .The holy angels have their offices in the order of God . Origen distinguishes them : Blessed Throne ( judicial and sovereign powers ); sublime dominions , principalities glorious , holy powers ( Princ. 1 5 , 1 , 5.3 , see also Col. 1: 16). The property of these holy angels , which puts them in a position to possess such power, dignity and glory , follows from their rank and their virtues. The rank of the spirit is determined by its origin and its age , both of which is decisive for the strength of his spark of light . The dignity of a mind based on its nature , namely, his ancestrally and personally acquired virtues and his skills he has developed throughout his existence itself . (See princ . 1 5.3 . ) In contrast to the properties imparted to the self- acquired skills were not taken to the spirits in the fall from the heavens .Neither " the hosts of the holy angels " nor the " thrones, dominions , principalities and powers " (cf. Lk. 2:13 and Colossians 1:16) assets the beginning of all things and the end of the universe completely to know. But it is visible that the enumerated holy spirits and powers are the origins himself the next , so they can gain higher knowledge than the rest. But like so much - very recognize these powers by revelations of the Son of God much they will still be able to understand , and the higher one of them much more than the lower - all to capture them is also impossible , for it is written: "Most of God's works in the inward parts . "( Princ. IV 3, 14 )Each believer , he may in the church of , Smallest ' ( youngest ) (cf. Matt 11, 11 ) , according to Origen is a guardian angel to the side. If the protégé unworthy through disobedience such warded , this angel of God to separate from him ( Princ. II 10.7 ) .Often there will be a struggle for people between good and evil spirits . The nature of these struggles have to imagine so that losses , threats , slander and shame are set against us to the factory after Origen. The enemy forces are not aimed merely at ensuring that we are guilty of this evil , but they want us thereby irritating to anger and anger to excess the tribulation or to utter despair , or, what is worse, you want to experience that we , exhausted and weary of life , let us be carried away to contend against God and accuse him steer the human life not according to law and equity ( Princ. III 2.6 ) .
The doctrine of Origen

Rebirth (reincarnation)
The doctrine of reincarnation of Pythagoras and Socrates comes to close after Hermippus quoted by Origen, the Jews , and is in fact in the Old Testament ( Wisdom of Solomon 2.1 in connection with 2.5 ) , further fragmented into indistinct traditional words of Jesus ( Mat . 11 , 14 and 17 , 12 , Mark 9 , 12) . .That up and down climbing ' the souls from or in multiple ( n ) life on earth is not given prey to chance by Origen, but is guided by the God's world. There is no (Eternal ) cycle , as the Pythagoreans - assumptions - what BC redemptive not such an absurd thought was ( cf. Cels V21 . ) . That up and down climbing ' the souls which the rise and the reintegration of apostates in the heavenly hierarchy. However, this can not be done by coercion or undue influence , because the beings have free will . God chooses the way of education through experience and instruction, and as the innermost core of all creation is divine, he must be the finite effect of his appeal to their original moral goodness certainly .

commentof the working group Origen to the recurring issue :Has Origen rebirth actually taught?Origen, in Greek written early masterpiece " peri archon " , apart from a few parts , no longer present in the original . Only a modified Latin translation of " de principii " of Rufinus ( 345-411 ) was saved to our times . Rufinus had by his own admission " inappropriate places " omitted or changed , including, among others , 200 years after Origen the doctrine of reincarnation was . The fact that Origen has this actually represented in his early work " peri archon " , can only be inferred from quotations by other authors. As a reliable respect to the correct quotes applies Jerome, who may also be " peri archon " translated into Latin. Unfortunately, this work has also been lost . The following Origeneszitat we owe an obtained signature of Jerome "Against John of Jerusalem ", section 19 in which he quotes Origen with sources that allowed a reconstruction of the text here. In the translation of Rufinus missing. The theologians Herwig Görgemanns and Heinrich Karpp have admirably detailed work reconstructs the original text from the translation of Rufinus and the quotes of different authors. This resulted in 1976, the book " Origen : Four books of the principles " in Darmstadt University Press .The following passage is in the reconstructed text of peri archon :Sophronius Eusebius Hieronymus ( 347-420 )I princ 5.3 according to the text reconstruction of Herwig Görgemanns and Heinrich Karpp by Missive 124.3 ( the entire section you can read here). All .. Creatures glide when they fall into neglect, gradually at lower levels down and take bodies based on the type of places ... and when they come near to the earth , they surround themselves with even denser bodies to ultimately tied to human flesh become ..... he changes his body as often as he changes his place of residence during the descent from the sky to the earth.

another quotes we oweTheophilus of Alexandria ( bishop of Alexandria , 385-412 ) :( princ I, 8 p.277 -279 Annex I , No. 7, letter of Theophilus of Alexandria (d. 412) , excerpt quoted from there Epistula 98.11 )But what 's it all mean , if he [ Origen ] explains that souls would repeatedly tied to the body and again separated from them .. ?Interestingly, Theophilus asked about the meaning of the passage and gives no further comment. It seems that Theophilus could start anything with this set . Repeated earthly life were back then - unlike today - never a separate topic of theological disputes , not even in the controversy with Gnosticism .

In the introductory text of his edict of 543 writesEmperor Justinian ( 483-565 )(quoted from F. Diekamp , The Origen disputes in the sixth century , publishing the Aschendorff 's bookstore Münster 1899 , p 46) :"From the spiritual being is a part, as he thinks [ Origen ] , fallen into sin and banished as a punishment in bodies. According to the measure of their sins , they are even the second and third times, and more often imprisoned in one body to after the completion of return to their former sin - cleansing and physical condition. "
These words from the introductory text of the edict against Origen shows that on Emperor Justinian known the doctrine of reincarnation and assigns to the author Origen. Over the next nine anathemas (which you can read here ), but occurs no record that the doctrine of reincarnation is specifically with the anathema . As with the paragraph 1 but any pre-existence is filled with the Anathemna order has been meant the doctrine of reincarnation .Since Origen lived 300 years before the Emperor Justinian , it is believed by most researchers that Justinian primarily wanted to meet the contemporary followers of Origen's doctrine and one can not rule out the contents of the anathemas 9 that Origen would have taught the same way but that this was a reflection of the contemporary Origenism more .The work peri archon is an early work of Origen , which is believed to have originated 212-215 . According to a report of Jerome in Epistula 84.10 this work of Origen was only intended for a small circle , a friend and patron did it later (around 230) , commonly known .In the other , mostly later writings of Origen (Contra Celsum I/20 comment and Matthew III , VIII and X ), we find places where it is expressed in polemical style against the Wiedereinkörperung what not to his prudent and deliberative style in " peri archon "fits . The answer to this inconsistency must remain open. Whether Origen in its early phase the idea of rebirth was close and has subsequently undergone a change of heart , if he expressed himself in these writings against only an endless transmigration thoughts or whether he had spread his wide-ranging view of the world only in a narrow circle of selected educated students to the less educated would not have been to place, remains historically in the dark . Another theory has to Till A. Mohr " back Kehrtet ye children of men " presented in : >> Although the doctrine of reincarnation would have been seamlessly integrated into the system origeneische , Origen has resisted because he saw the contradiction to the belief in the bodily resurrection . Although it was a difficult enough yourself with this belief , he had << still held up to the end of it.It is undisputed historical records that followers of Origen held the doctrine of rebirth and thereby appealed to Origen.Because of these above . Contradictions and insufficient source material is claimed by some theologians that Origen would have thought at any time the rebirth ever possible and emphasize the points of the later texts . They argue the authors of the next few centuries would have between the Origenism Origen and can no longer be distinguished , thus falsely Origen assumed a teaching that had only developed the Origenists .Other opinions , so our working group from Origen, emphasizing the early Origen with his set out in " peri archon " conclusive picture of the world , despite all the distortions of the texts still remains recognizable . This rebirth is embedded in his doctrine of pre-existence , His angels teaching and his teaching of a cosmology .The world view of Origen can be described in brief as follows: The origin of all beings comes from God and not substantive harmonic light worlds . The God-given spiritual freedom associated with creativity lead in part of the nature of deviations from the plan of creation . The disharmonious the creations are , the narrower leads the divine plan the creatures . In the most extreme deviations , that is, in the deepest stage of the case, the original angels into demons . The material world (first is where the scientific cosmology with the Big Bang a ) God creates a place of purification and toughest parole. Be incarnated in it according to divine plan not only plants and animals but primarily willing to return all case levels as many times as they need the hard school . In this way, the angels and inhabitants can be the harmonious heavenly worlds of light also from demons again . Christ himself had come as a man on the earth, for the reconnection of the apostates with God is not possible without them, the way is taught there. Christ , as taught Origen, showed us this path with the substance of his soul.
